The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Maria Island, Tasmania

Maria Island was one of my favourite places I visited in Tasmania. This little island on the east coast is kind of like a mini-Tasmania, without the people. It has everything you want to see in Tasmania all in one place: convict heritage sites, amazing wildlife, and great outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and camping. Really the only thing it’s missing is delicious local Tasmanian food. (But you can buy that at the Salamanca Market in Hobart and bring it over for the complete experience 🙂 ) A visit to Maria Island is not at the very top of most people’s Tasmania bucket list, so it’s never exceptionally busy. Which is awesome since it means you won’t have to fight crowds while you walk through convict ruins, snap photos of adorable wombats and wallabies, or hike and bike to beautiful rock formations. Here’s my complete guide to visiting Maria Island, Tasmania. It covers all the bases including things to see, how to get there, how to get around, where...

Checking in to Pretty Beach House North of Sydney

On a recent visit to Sydney I ventured beyond the city to discover the Central Coast and stay at Pretty Beach House. Despite having lived grown up in Australia and travelled to more than 70 countries in the world, until this trip I still had not discovered this part of my home country. A few years ago I made a promise to myself to see more of Australia. Too often we go in search of foreign destinations, cultures, food and languages different too our own. Too often we forget what is in our own backyard. Since then I have travelled to the Northern Territory to discover the true Aussie outback, visited many of the secret islands of Australia including Norfolk Island and the beautiful Lord Howe Island . I have slept under the stars when heliswag camping in the Flinders Ranges and travelled to the world renowned Kangaroo Island to see more kangaroos than I have in my lifetime. Pretty Beach House For this journey, I wanted to take time to switch off, relax and take ...

A Guide to Visiting Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Located off the coast of South Australia is one of the nation’s best-kept secrets; Kangaroo Island. Aptly named, the island is a wildlife lover’s dream. Sure, there are kangaroos… but you’ll also experience a range of rare wildlife viewings in abundance: wombats, echidnas, and the country’s third largest sea lion colony (with their very own protected beach, mind you!) If I haven’t quite convinced you yet, here’s how Kangaroo Island stole my heart! Check In: Southern Ocean Lodge If there’s just one wildlife lodge you should visit in your lifetime, make it Southern Ocean Lodge. This all-inclusive lodge doesn’t come cheap, but it does involve an experience of a lifetime. Guests are picked up from the airport on arrival and treated to every luxury throughout their stay: three meals a day with an open bar, daily guided tours to various points of interest around the island and a complete oasis tucked neatly away down a guest-access-only driveway on the Southern coast of the island. Mus...

My Top 9 Favorite Hostels in Australia

Updated: 03/03/20 | March 3rd, 2020 I love Australia. It’s one of my favorite countries in the world. I’ve been going there for over a decade and have crossed the country more times than I’ve crisscrossed my own country. I’ve stayed in countless hostels throughout Australia. Some of them were great, some of them were terrible, some of them were just OK. I’ve been visiting Australia for a decade and have stayed in dozens upon dozens of hostels around the country. There are a lot of things to consider when selecting a hostel. The top four when picking the best hostel in Australia are: Location – Cities here are big and they can take some time to get around. Pick a place that is central to the sites and nightlife you want to see. All the hostels listed here are in central locations. Price – In Australia, you really get what you pay for, so if you go with a really cheap one, you’re probably going to get a hostel that is small, cramped, and doesn...
